Frequently Asked Questions

Enrollment & Eligibility

Q. How do I enroll in an Altus Dental program through the Health Connector?
Altus Dental offers “Qualified Dental Plans (QDPs)” through the Health Connector for both individuals and small groups. You would simply enroll through the Health Connector website, and pay the Health Connector directly for your dental coverage. Once you enroll, Altus Dental will administer your new dental plan, including sending you an ID card and processing your claims.

Visit MAhealthconnector.org to learn more or shop for an Altus Dental program. All of our plans offer “Essential Pediatric Dental Benefts” as required by the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Q. What's the difference between "policy" year vs. "calendar" year?
When you enroll in coverage through the Health Connector, your coverage is based on a “policy,” rather than typical “calendar” year coverage period. In other words, if you enroll on February 1, your coverage will be in effect for a 12-month policy year, ending on January 31 of the following year.

Plan Benefits

Q. What are the dental benefits offered through Health Connector?
Individuals and Families, click here for benefit summaries. We offer several options for individuals and families through the Health Connector, including a plan that covers children under age 19 that qualifies as an “Essential Health Benefit (EHB)” under the health care reform law.

We offer “High” and “Low” Option plans that cover individuals over age 19, as well as children under age 19.

For our Small Group Programs, click here for benefit summaries. For small employers (fewer than 50 employees), we offer several plan options – including a qualified pediatric dental plan for children under age 19 – as well as plans that offer both the pediatric dental benefit and coverage for individuals over age 19.

Q. What is a "Qualified Dental Plan?"
"Qualified Dental Plan,” or QDP, is a designation given to dental plans available on the Health Connector, verifying that they meet state guidelines and include the pediatric essential benefits. Altus Dental is one of five dental plans in the state to receive this designation.

Q. What are Pediatric Essential Health Benefits?
Pediatric dental coverage for children under age 19 is one of 10 required benefits under the new health care reform law, the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This unique benefit provides 100% coverage for the most-commonly performed preventive procedures for children, such as x-rays, exams, fluoride, and sealants, with no annual or lifetime maximums – as well as coverage for fillings and other services. Dental Network

Q. How can I find out if my dentist participates in your program?
Altus Dental offers the largest dental PPO (preferred provider) network in Massachusetts, with more than 6,200 dental locations around the state, and additional locations in Rhode Island and southern New Hampshire. Just enter your dentist’s name in our dentist search to see if he or she already participates in the Altus Dental network.

Q. Are benefits available if I visit a dentist who is not in your network?
Even if your dentist does not participate, you will still receive coverage, however, your out-of-pocket costs will be higher because non-participating dentists are not contracted with Altus Dental and are not required to accept our fee as payment in full.

Q. What is CONNECTION Dental?
In addition to our local network of dentists, Altus Dental provides nationwide coverage through the CONNECTION Dental network – with access to nearly 110,000 participating dental office locations across the United States.
